In cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Graco Childrens Products is voluntarily recalling about 1.5 million strollers. The recall includes certain models of the Graco Passage, Alano and Spree Strollers and travel systems. The hinges on the strollers canopy pose a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is opening or closing the canopy. Graco has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the strollers canopy hinge mechanism, including five fingertip amputations and two lacerations. CPSCs video news release includes soundbites from CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum, Spanish spokesperson Arlene Flecha, and b-roll of the recalled Graco stroller. For more visit CPSC.gov or call CPSC’s Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772, Graco manufactured two different styles of hinge mechanisms for these stroller models. Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches (see photo below) are included in this recall. The recalled strollers were manufactured between October 2004 and February 2008. The model number and manufacture date are located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.
Switzerland’s secret shame For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Generations of Swiss children lost their childhoods to state-endorsed abuse and forced labour. This shocking report brings us their stories, shedding light on a little-known dark chapter of Swiss history. “Our Switzerland, which always wants to be goodie-goodies, has so many skeletons in its cupboard”, Maria Magdalena tells us. Right up until 1981 the Swiss state sent thousands of teenagers like Maria to places like Hindelbank women’s prison for ‘re-education’. Accused of being rebellious or promiscuous they were held indefinitely without trial. “I was beaten for everything”, Hugo Zingg, who was a so-called ‘contract child’ recalls. Of the five children on the farm he was forced to work on, he was the only one not to commit suicide. However, possibly the most shocking story is that of Bernette Gechter. Her strictly religious foster parents took her to a doctor at 7 years old, believing she was sexually active. She was diagnosed with a brain disorder and forced to undergo electro-shock therapy. At 18 when she became pregnant, they aborted the baby and sterilized her because they thought she was unfit to be a mother. The survivors are campaigning for recognition, but the Swiss government still refuses to hold a full investigation or discuss remuneration for the victims. In this video clip, two videos shot three months apart show Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett changing his story about whether he bullied the Penn State Board of Trustees into firing Coach Joe Paterno and President Graham Spanier by reminding them over a speakerphone of a “10-year-old child” in the shower.
Julia Child was the initiator of the good food crusade. In our world of gastronomy, there are definitely two Americas: the one before Julia, and the one after. She was the pioneer who elevated good food to a higher priority in this country. Without her, legions of dedicated artisanal suppliers, passionate chefs, and prolific writers would not be here today, arguing about the true meaning of organic or local and seasonal boundaries or the proper age of a Berkshire pig to achieve ideal belly fat. It’s wonderful to see the world celebrating Julia on the 100th anniversary of her birth. But I’m not surprised, because there is no other “food celebrity” who inspires more affection and devotion. She was the beginning of our modern concept of a food celebrity. Julia’s personality was so huge and so generous that it came through the TV. Whether she was tossing a limp, American-style baguette over her shoulder in disgust or burning her eyebrows off making bananas flambé, Julia embodied the spirit of adventure in cooking. She was always learning, even as she taught. She made cooking entertaining, took it from drudgery to artistry and beyond that, to fun. And she did it in very approachable way, making mistakes, dropping things on the floor, the way you do in real life. Suddenly, French food wasn’t so fancy; it was food you could make at home. I met Julia, who would end up helping me promote D’Artagnan, while her influence was at its height. She could not participate in a cooking …

“Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” is the last track on Electric Ladyland, the third and final album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song is known for its wah-wah-heavy guitar work. It is #101 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time. The song was recorded in 1968, and was re-released as a single after Hendrix’s death in 1970. It reached Number 1 in the UK, making it the band’s only single to top the charts. It was catalogued as “Voodoo Chile” (Track 2095 001), and that is the title which appears on the single and is the title referred to officially. This obviously confuses it with the 15-minute song “Voodoo Chile” also on Electric Ladyland. The B-side of the single featured two of his previous hits: “Hey Joe” and “All Along the Watchtower”. — You can download the song or the album here: itunes.apple.com —

Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you’ve never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It’s also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990.
